The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for filing the Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) and paying provident fund contributions for the September 2026 wage month to October 31, 2026, giving employers roughly two more weeks than the usual October 15 cutoff. The relief was announced in an official circular issued on October 13, 2026, and has been granted under Paragraph 28(3) of the Employees' Provident Funds Scheme, 1952. It follows the central government's recent decision to raise the statutory EPF wage ceiling from INR 15,000 to INR 25,000 per month, which left payroll teams across the country scrambling to update their systems.

The extension applies only to the September 2026 remittance cycle and is a one-time relief. Every other rule on filing and remittance remains unchanged.

Why EPFO Gave Employers More Time

The Ministry of Labour and Employment notified the wage ceiling revision on September 17, 2026, in the middle of the September salary cycle. As a result, many organisations faced technical hurdles while reconfiguring their ERP and payroll software. Calculations for the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) had to be adjusted to reflect the new deduction slabs and contribution thresholds. EPFO Clarifies EPS Eligibility After Wage Ceiling Rises to INR 25,000: Who Gets Pension Cover.

September 2026 Cycle At A Glance

The standard deadline of October 15, 2026 now stands shifted to October 31, 2026 for the September wage month. The statutory wage ceiling under the revised notification is INR 25,000 per month, up from INR 15,000.

What Is The ECR?

The Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) is a monthly statement that registered establishments submit through the EPFO Employer Unified Portal. It lists worker-wise wages, statutory deductions, employer contributions and administrative charges. Timely filing ensures continuous service tracking, smooth credit of interest and updated passbook balances for covered employees. PF Withdrawal via UPI Coming Soon? How Employers Can File The ECR Online

Employers need to log in to the Employer Unified Portal with their credentials and select ECR Statement Upload from the Payments menu. They should then download the pre-filled ECR file or template, update employee breakups in line with the revised wage cap and keep the format strictly as per EPFO specifications. After uploading the text file, they must check the auto-generated summary statement and approve it to generate the payment challan.

EPFO Advisory For Establishments

EPFO has advised establishments not to wait for the last date. Reconciling member data and remitting dues well before October 31, 2026 will help employers avoid last-minute portal congestion, as well as statutory damages and penal interest under Section 7Q and Section 14B of the EPF Act.
