EPFO Higher Pension: Where Things Stand on Pending Claims, Processing and Arrears
The government has told Parliament that EPFO is taking four steps to speed up processing of higher-pension applications under the EPS scheme, though no fresh deadline has been set for clearing the backlog. As of August 5, 2026, 11,595 of the 15.24 lakh applications received remain pending, with disposal rates varying sharply by region.
The government has told Parliament that the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is taking four specific steps to speed up the processing of higher-pension applications under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), even as it stopped short of setting a new deadline for clearing the remaining backlog or releasing pending arrears.
The update, given in the Lok Sabha on August 10, comes amid continued questions from Members of Parliament over delays faced by employees and pensioners who opted for pension on higher wages following a landmark Supreme Court ruling.
The Backdrop: A 2022 Supreme Court Verdict
The higher-pension exercise traces back to the Supreme Court's judgment of November 4, 2022, which allowed eligible EPS members who had contributed on their actual basic salaries - above the statutory wage ceiling - to opt for a higher pension, subject to certain conditions. How EPFO Members Can Track Higher Pension Claim Status: A Step-by-Step Guide.
Following the verdict, EPFO opened an online facility for eligible employees and pensioners to submit applications for validation of their Joint Options. Employers were required to forward these applications to EPFO for verification and processing.
Where the Numbers Stand
According to data shared in the Lok Sabha, EPFO had received a total of 15,24,365 applications for higher pension as of August 5, 2026. Of these, 11,595 cases remained pending.
The disposal figures vary sharply across regions. Bengaluru reported one of the lowest backlogs, with only 9 pending cases out of over 1 lakh applications, while regions including Punjab and Himachal Pradesh recorded comparatively higher numbers of unresolved cases. By application volume, Telangana's Hyderabad regional office recorded the highest count at 1,65,331 applications, followed by Mumbai-1 (Bandra) at 1,26,444 and the rest of Maharashtra, excluding Mumbai, at 1,26,311.
Separately, EPFO has so far issued 1,49,806 Pension Payment Orders to applicants whose cases have cleared verification and the required contribution process, according to recent data cited in media reports.
Four Steps EPFO Says It Is Taking
In its Lok Sabha reply, the government listed the measures EPFO has adopted to implement the Supreme Court's directions "in a time-bound manner":
- An online facility for submission and validation of Joint Option applications
- Periodic instructions issued to Regional EPFO offices for timely disposal of pending cases
- Regular video conferences with Zonal and Regional Offices to review progress and flag bottlenecks
- Clarificatory circulars, including one issued on January 18, 2025, aimed at ensuring uniform implementation across regions, including for exempted establishments
The government also reiterated that it remains committed to ensuring maximum benefit for workers under the EPS framework, while accounting for the financial health of the pension fund and its long-term liabilities.
No New Deadline Announced
Despite outlining these steps, the government's response did not include a fresh, universal deadline for resolving all pending applications or disbursing outstanding arrears. This mirrors an earlier Lok Sabha reply from March 2026, in which the Labour Ministry stated that more than 99.2 percent of applications received by that point had already been disposed of, without committing to a firm closure date for the remainder.
For applicants and pensioners still awaiting a resolution, the coordination required between employees, employers and EPFO offices — including verification of records and past contributions — continues to be a factor behind delays in individual cases.
What This Means for Applicants
The latest response signals continued monitoring pressure on EPFO's regional offices rather than an assurance of immediate resolution. Officials have advised applicants with pending cases to track their status directly through EPFO's official channels rather than rely on unverified updates.
Those who have already received a demand letter — which calculates arrears contributions along with applicable interest — are expected to complete the required payment and documentation within the stipulated window to move their cases toward final settlement.
