The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced new rules for final withdrawal of EPF balances, including a 12-month waiting period for members who quit their jobs or retire before attaining 55 years of age.

However, members can withdraw 75 per cent of their EPF balance within 12 months of quitting or retiring from service. Those who have attained 55 years of age can withdraw their entire EPF balance without waiting for 12 months, EPFO officials said.

What Is The New EPFO 12-Month Waiting Period Rule?

The EPFO introduced the 12-month waiting period through a notification issued on June 29, 2026, following a decision by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT). The rule is aimed at preventing members from withdrawing their entire EPF savings when switching jobs. EPFO Update: Final PF Withdrawals Will Now Earn Interest Till Authorisation Date.

Under the new provision, members who leave employment before turning 55 can withdraw 75 per cent of their EPF balance during the 12-month waiting period. The remaining amount can be withdrawn after the applicable waiting period.

Can Members Above 55 Withdraw 100% EPF?

Yes. Members who have attained 55 years of age can withdraw the full amount standing to their credit on retirement from service. The EPFO has clarified that such members should select the ‘Retirement after 55 years’ option while submitting their claim. EPFO E-Nomination Online Guide: Step-by-Step Process, Eligibility and Rules.

Those who mistakenly select the regular ‘Retirement’ option may receive a message saying that they are subject to the 12-month waiting period.

How Quickly Will EPFO Process Claims?

According to an EPFO official, members aged 55 years or above can receive their funds within seven to 10 days if the claim amount is more than INR 5 lakh. For claims below INR 5 lakh, the funds may be disbursed within three days.

Why Has EPFO Introduced The Waiting Period?

The EPFO said the measure was introduced after it observed that members were frequently withdrawing their entire PF savings while changing jobs. This left some members with significantly smaller EPF balances at the time of retirement.

The rule is intended to encourage members to retain a portion of their retirement savings instead of making complete withdrawals during job changes.

When Can Members Withdraw Their Full EPF Balance?

Final EPF settlement can be claimed in cases including:

  • Retirement from service after attaining 55 years of age
  • Termination of employment
  • Migration to a foreign country
  • Closure of an establishment
  • Permanent disability

How Many Members Withdrew Their EPF In 2024-25?

According to EPFO data, 52,95,281 members opted for final settlement of their claims in 2024-25. More than 75 per cent of these members received less than INR 50,000.

Around 48.73 per cent of members received less than INR 20,000. Meanwhile, 1.29 per cent received between INR 5 lakh and INR 10 lakh, 1.01 per cent received between INR 10 lakh and INR 25 lakh and only 0.62 per cent received more than INR 25 lakh.

How Much EPF Corpus Could Remain After Partial Withdrawal?

EPFO's analysis indicated that a member earning a monthly wage of INR 15,000 could accumulate an EPF corpus of around INR 14 lakh by retirement. Under the provision requiring at least 25 per cent of the balance to be retained, the member would have around INR 3.5 lakh remaining in the EPF account.
