HDFC Bank MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan has opted out of reappointment and will retire on October 26. The board is now moving to fast-track the search for his successor. 'The board deeply appreciated his commitment, leadership, contribution to the growth and stability of the Bank and his role in successful completion of one of the largest mergers in corporate India,' the private lender said in a regulatory filing.

HDFC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan has decided not to seek reappointment for a third term, paving the way for his retirement from the financial institution on October 26. The bank confirmed the development in an official stock exchange filing on Saturday, August 29, noting that Jagdishan formally conveyed his choice to step down earlier in the day.

During its meeting, the Board of Directors took formal note of the communication and praised Jagdishan's extensive service to the country's largest private-sector lender. In its statement, the board deeply appreciated his “commitment, leadership, contribution to growth, stability of the Bank” and highlighted his central role in steering the institution through the historic mega-merger between HDFC Bank and Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), recognised as one of the largest corporate amalgamations in Indian history.

Succession Planning Fast-Tracked

With Jagdishan set to step down at the close of business hours on October 26, the board has moved quickly to address future leadership requirements. HDFC Bank announced that it has decided to fast-track the formal process for the selection and appointment of a successor. Jagdishan, who originally joined HDFC Bank in 1996 as a finance manager and later served as Chief Financial Officer before succeeding Aditya Puri as CEO, leaves as the board initiates its search for the next chief executive.
