October 2026 brings a packed calendar of income tax compliance deadlines for taxpayers, employers, businesses, deductors and other specified entities, ranging from TDS and TCS payments to quarterly statements and the filing of the new Form 141 for specified transactions, even as taxpayers navigate the ongoing transition from the Income-tax Act, 1961 to the Income-tax Act, 2025. The Income Tax Department has clarified that the ITR for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, covering income earned during FY 2025-26, will continue to be governed by the old 1961 Act, while the new Act applies from Tax Year 2026-27 onwards. Here is a full breakdown of the key dates to track this month.

October 7: TDS and TCS Payment Deadline

Tax deducted or collected during September 2026 must generally be deposited with the Central Government by October 7, 2026, in line with the standard rule requiring TDS deposits by the seventh day of the following month, a timeline retained under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. Certain specified transactions, including those covered under the new Form 141, follow a separate 30-day deadline instead.

October 15: Form 132, Form 147 and Form 148 Due

Several specialised compliance requirements fall due mid-month for specified entities. Form 132, the TDS certificate linked to Form 141 transactions, is issued within a prescribed timeline. Authorised dealers must furnish Form 147 for specified remittances made during the quarter, while eligible IFSC units must file Form 148 for their specified remittances. These largely apply to specified deductors, authorised dealers and IFSC units rather than ordinary salaried taxpayers. Income Tax Rules Amended: CBDT Extends Registration Deadline to March 31, 2027; Arrest Provisions Removed.

October 30: Form 141 Filing Deadline

Form 141, a new consolidated challan-cum-statement introduced under the Income-tax Act, 2025, replaces the earlier Forms 26QB, 26QC, 26QD and 26QE. It covers TDS on certain rent payments, transfer of immovable property, specified payments by individuals or HUFs to contractors or professionals, and transfers of virtual digital assets. The form must be furnished, and the deducted amount paid, within 30 days from the end of the month in which tax was deducted, meaning tax deducted in September 2026 must be reported and paid by October 30, 2026, through the income tax e-filing portal. How To Check Your Income Tax Refund Status Online?

October 31: ITR Deadline for Tax-Audit Cases

October 31 is a key deadline for taxpayers whose accounts require an audit and who are not covered by transfer-pricing provisions, with the ITR filing deadline for these AY 2026-27 cases set for this date under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The tax audit report itself was due earlier, by September 30, 2026. Taxpayers covered by transfer-pricing provisions get a longer ITR deadline of November 30, 2026, though their audit report is still due by October 31.

October 31: Quarterly TDS and TCS Statements

The same date also marks the deadline for several quarterly TDS and TCS statements covering the July-September 2026 quarter under the new Act. Employers and specified banks must file Form 138 (formerly Form 24Q) for TDS on salary, pension or specified interest income. Form 140 (formerly Form 26Q) applies to TDS on non-salary payments to residents such as commission, brokerage, professional fees and rent. Form 143 covers quarterly TCS statements, Form 144 applies to TDS on non-salary payments to non-residents, and Form 142 (formerly Form 26QF) is required from eligible virtual digital asset exchanges for TDS on VDA transfers.

October 31: Form 3CEB and Other Specialised Filings

Taxpayers covered under section 92E must furnish the accountant's report in Form 3CEB for international and specified domestic transactions by October 31, 2026, alongside their tax audit report. October 31 may also apply to taxpayers claiming deductions or benefits under sections such as 80JJAA, 80LA, 80QQB, 80RRB, 115AD, 115BBF, 115JB, 115JC and 10(4D), depending on individual eligibility.

Taxpayers are advised to verify which deadlines apply to their specific case and to select the correct Assessment Year or Tax Year while making payments or filing forms.
