The scene, which depicted Mandakini's character Ganga seemingly breastfeeding a child, ignited a firestorm of controversy upon the film's release and has remained a talking point in Indian cinematic history. Speaking to ANI, Mandakini clarified that the scene was masterfully orchestrated through camera angles and clever positioning to create the illusion, rather than actual breastfeeding.
"Nahi wo tha hi nahi, wo itna ache tareeke se unhone picturise kiya tha," she stated, adding that no body double was used and she performed the scene herself.
Comparing the scene to today's standards, Mandakini remarked, "If I go on to explain how it was done, it would be too long (a story). The cleavage that is seen on screen, you see so much of it, it is all technically done. But the way skin show is done in today's times, that was nothing. We should not be even talking about it. It (her scene) was also a pure form. Nowadays, it is all about sexuality."
She expressed no regrets about the scenes, acknowledging Raj Kapoor's captivating persona during their discussions for the film.
Mandakini, born Yasmeen Joseph on July 30, 1963, was discovered by Raj Kapoor and given her screen name, making her debut at approximately 17 years old in the film.
