Mumbai witnessed a fresh escalation in the ongoing public discourse between Bollywood veterans Piyush Mishra and Naseeruddin Shah, as Mishra publicly called out Shah for what he termed "selective activism." The fiery remarks from Mishra came shortly after Shah's prominent appearance at a Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest in Mumbai on October 2, 2026. Piyush Mishra Slams Naseeruddin Shah
Piyush Mishra, known for his candid opinions, released a video on social media on October 5, 2026, directly addressing Naseeruddin Shah. In the video, Mishra expressed his dismay over Shah's participation in the CJP demonstration while allegedly remaining silent on other significant national events.
The CJP protest, held at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, was organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls. Naseeruddin Shah notably met CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke at the event, embracing him in a public display of support.
Mishra's latest critique reignites a past public disagreement between the two actors, which earlier stemmed from Shah's "dog with a bone" remark in July/August 2026, where he criticised Bollywood personalities for their silence on student protests, including the CJP-led agitation at Jantar Mantar and the Jharkhand student movement.
Piyush Mishra on Naseeruddin Shah's Silence: Captain Smit Machchhar Incident and More
In his social media video, Piyush Mishra directly challenged Naseeruddin Shah on several specific incidents where he felt Shah's voice was conspicuously absent. Mishra urged Shah to acknowledge the bravery of Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot who, on Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, reportedly saved 174 people (passengers and crew) after an onboard attack from his co-pilot. "Sir, an accident was averted recently. This happened on Fly Dubai Flight 1073... Mr. Smith Machchhar displayed bravery and saved the lives of 174 people. Please comment on that as well, congratulate him, Sir,” Mishra stated.

Mishra also highlighted the alleged police brutality and violence against students at Lovely Professional University (LPU), where female students were reportedly dragged by their hair by the police. Furthermore, Mishra recalled Shah's earlier response to a plea for aid during the Jharkhand student protests, where Shah had reportedly offered a poetic response. Mishra sarcastically remarked that the students needed "aata and daal" (food) rather than dense Urdu poetry that even he found difficult to comprehend. He concluded his video with a warning, stating, "Now if you ever give any statement Piyush Mishra will put out a retort."
