Nerkonda Paarvai Movie Review: Ever since Boney Kapoor announced that he will be remaking Shoojit Sircar's Pink in Tamil with Ajith Kumar, fans have been waiting with bated breaths to see if the filmmaker will be able to do justice to the nuance of the original film. If you remember, the Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu starrer hit the bullseye as they picked on the necessity of an essential subject. Needless to say, with Ajith Kumar's involvement in the Tamil remake titled Nerkonda Paarvai, fans were bound to flock over to the theatres at the time of its release. To be quite honest, roping in a public figure like Ajith Kumar for a film that tackles a very important issue, was the best choice for the film! But did he do justice to the film? Did he do justice to his character as he portrayed a lawyer, which was originally essayed by Big B? Read on to find out more. Nerkonda Paarvai: After PINK Remake, 5 Movies of Thala Ajith That Should Be Remade in Bollywood (And Who Should Play Him)

The plot of Nerkonda Paarvai is the same as the Hindi one. It starts with three girls rushing back home while three boys head to the hospital with one of them profusely bleeding from his temple and eye. Eventually, as the story unravels, it is revealed that the six of them were chilling together but all hell broke loose when the boys tried to make a move on the girls and did not care for their consent. Keeping in mind the subject of consent and what the word 'no' is perceived as and what it should be understood as, the filmmaker, H Vinoth, explored the plot in Nerkonda Paarvai. Now before we discuss how the film fared, one essential thing you must know is the meaning of the film's title, Nerkonda Paarvai. Picked from celebrated poet Subramania Bharati's poem, Pudhumai Penn, Nerkonda Paarvai translates as a celebration of a modern woman.

Ajith Kumar Birthday Special: 7 Movies That Made Thala Go Beyond His Mass Persona Image

Beautiful, isn't it? Well, the title couldn't have been more apt for a film that glorifies a modern woman's lifestyle and how she must be treated equally and not be perceived as promiscuous, arrogant or even 'easy.' The thought has been spoken about since ages but clearly, the acceptance towards the idea of a modern woman is still a work in progress. But with films like Pink and now Nerkonda Paarvai, perhaps it will be easier to connect with the audience? Let's speak about the direction and the filmmaking aspect. Considering how Shoojit Sircar proved how a low-budget film could cause a stir in the country, there are too many stakes riding on Nerkonda Paarvai. However, with the way H Vinoth has handled the script and even his light editions and additions have been well received. My primary concern with Thala Ajith's involvement in the project was how the filmmaker might try to shift from the main focus of the film.

Surprisingly, the way H Vinoth managed to balance out the actual script and bringing in a little masala with some romance between Ajith Kumar (Advocate Bharat) and his wife, his struggles with depression and bipolarity, everything just fits! Kudos to the filmmaker for making it dramatic, entertaining and meaningful. Ajith as Bharat is phenomenal. I might be egged for this later but he has definitely surpassed Amitabh Bachchan's original act by miles! Be it his austere nature, his performance in the courtroom, his brilliant dialogue delivery that makes you smirk but think at the same time and much more. Ajith has done such a fine job that you'll literally keep waiting for his return to the screen after every scene where he is absent! The main protagonists, Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami Vemnkatachalam and Andrea Tariang, have done a decent job too. It did seem like they were lacking the necessary emotions and some of the pertinent scenes turned out to be underwhelming.

There were times when the film did make you squirm with discomfort over the things the girls went through, much like in the original. However, it wasn't as impacting as I expected. But every dialogue delivered by Ajith Kumar was so cleverly written that it really stayed with me. Be it his cross-questioning with the Lady Inspector Amudha to how he broke Adhik (the accused) in the courtroom and even explained how a simple word like 'no' holds so much importance in a woman and man's life but is disregarded. I did have my concerns about the way the ending was handled. I do believe though that it is necessary to end it on a certain note that would make the audience hopeful.

Yays

- Thala Ajith's spotless performance as Bharat

- The clever dialogues penned down and delivered by the Thala

- H Vinoth's direction in the film

- The smart amendments made in the script to work with all kinds of audience

- An engaging second half, especially the courtroom scene

- The justification of Bharat's erratic nature

Nays

- The performances of Shraddha Srinath and Abhirami Venkatachalam

- The underwhelming courtroom breakdowns

- The prosecutor's irksome dialogues and the way it was delivered

Final Word

Yes. Please watch this film! Ajith Kumar has definitely given his best performance in the film which should definitely be enjoyed. Not to mention how it tackles a brave issue about the idea of a modern woman in a 'traditional' man's head.
