Independent game development studio KO_OP, known for Goodbye Volcano High and Young Suns, has laid off 13 employees as the studio navigates a severe funding shortfall. In a statement shared on Bluesky, the worker-run developer explained that the layoffs were necessary to ensure the studio's long-term survival amid an increasingly challenging economic landscape for video game financing.
Funding Pressures Lead to Staff Reductions
The studio noted that the broader funding environment for game development has shifted dramatically over the past few years. Unlike previous production cycles, the team was unable to secure financial backing for new projects while simultaneously maintaining its current workload. KO_OP's Statement About Layoffs
"The games funding landscape has changed radically over the last few years, and unlike previous project cycles, this time we have been unable to secure funding for new projects while developing our current engagements," the post on Bluesky reads. Because KO_OP operates as a worker-run entity, the decision was reached through internal consensus.
"As with all our company's operational decisions, this one was made democratically and was motivated by the survival of the studio rather than maximising projects. Our members are regularly updated on our cash flow situation and were made aware of this upcoming shortfall well in advance," the studio stated.
Impacted Staff and Ongoing Support
The studio confirmed that the reductions affected multiple levels of the organisation, including team leads and elected executives. Despite the departures, KO_OP pledged that any future profits generated by Young Suns -which is currently available on Xbox and slated for upcoming releases on additional platforms - will continue to be shared with the impacted former employees. Looking ahead, KO_OP's remaining team is shifting its focus toward developing new concepts and prototypes while providing ongoing updates and support for the multiplayer life simulator. The studio added that if financial conditions improve and new funding is secured in the coming months, it intends to rehire as many affected staff members as possible.
