New Delhi, June 4: One among the Border Security Force (BSF) jawans killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan in Jammu & Kashmir's Akhnoor sector on Saturday was set to get married on June 20.

The deceased, identified as constable VK Pandey, was set to return to his native village of Sathigawan in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district. In the ceasefire violation on Saturday, however, he was struck with bullets fired unprovoked from the Pakistani side.

Pandey was declared dead at Army's RR Hospital in Jammu, where he was rushed alonisde ASI S N Yadav.

Pandey's death has plunged Sathigawan village into depression. At his home, where preparations were underway for the wedding, a creepy silence remained as his corpse returned on Sunday wrapped in the tricolour.

The ceasefire violation on Saturday came in the aftermath of DGMO-level talks between India and Pakistan on May 29, where both sides agreed to resolve the turbulence at the border.

The cross-border firings have seen a spurt in 2018, with more than 800 instances of cross-border firing reported in the first five months.

Reacting the ceasefire violation of Saturday, BSF IG of Jammu, Ram Awtar said Pakistan is "not honouring" the 2003 ceasefire agreement between the two sides.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, while speaking at a recent event, said the BSF as well as the Indian Army has been instructed to retaliate in equal terms. "We will not be the one to fire the first bullet. But if we are attacked, then our forces will not hesitate to shoot back," he said.
