Mumbai, January 10: Customers planning physical visits to bank branches in the coming week, January 12 to 18, should take note of several scheduled closures across the country. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar for January 2026, banks in various states will observe holidays between January 12 and January 18 due to a cluster of regional festivals, including Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu.
While digital banking services remain unaffected, offline transactions and cheque clearances will be paused on specific dates depending on the region. List of Days Banks Will Observe Closure Next Week
- Monday, January 12: Banks will stay shut in Kolkata for the birthday of Swami Vivekananda
- Wednesday, January 14: Banks in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Itanagar will remain closed for business due to Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu festivals.
- Thursday, January 15: On this day, physical banking will be affected in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada in view of the holiday declared for Uttarayana Punyakala/Pongal/Maghe Sankranti/Makara Sankranti. Additionally, banks will observe closure in Belapur, Mumbai, and Nagpur in view of the Municipal Corporation elections in Maharashtra.
- Friday, January 16: In view of Thiruvalluvar Day and Kanuma, banks will stay shut in Chennai and Vijayawada.
- Saturday, January 17: RBI has declared January 17 a holiday in Chennai for the Uzhavar Thirunal festival.
Banks To Observe Weekend Closures
In addition to the festival-related breaks, the standard weekly closure applies to all banks across the country toward the end of the period.
Sunday, January 18: All private and public sector banks nationwide will observe a holiday as per the standard weekly off.
It is important to note that January 17 is the third Saturday of the month. Since banks only observe holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays, branches will remain open for full-day operations this coming Saturday. Despite the physical branch closures, essential digital banking infrastructure will continue to operate without interruption.
Online Banking: Net banking and mobile banking apps will be available 24/7 for fund transfers.
UPI and IMPS: Immediate payment services will remain functional for real-time transactions.
ATMs: Cash withdrawal and deposit machines will be operational, though customers in high-celebration areas are advised that some machines may experience cash-out conditions during extended breaks.
