Why Was CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke Detained?
Dipke was detained by Delhi Police on Friday, October 16, after leaving a residence in the Jhandewalan area, where he had been staying. He was heading towards Connaught Place for the CJP's planned 'Lehra Do Tiranga' march. Police personnel stopped him, citing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). According to police, the proposed gathering raised concerns about traffic congestion, public safety and disruption to commercial activity in Connaught Place, a busy business and transport hub.
During the exchange with police, Dipke questioned the grounds for his detention and argued that the party intended to wave the national flag. Police maintained that restrictions were in force in the area and that the gathering could create law-and-order problems. Police subsequently initiated proceedings against Dipke under Sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS, relating to preventive action to avert a potential breach of peace. He was produced before a Special Executive Magistrate on Saturday and granted conditional bail. ‘Band Karo, Dafa Ho Jao’: Ruckus at Abhijeet Dipke, Neha Bora’s Delhi Press Conference (Video).
What Are the Conditions of Dipke's Release?
Dipke's release followed his appearance before the Special Executive Magistrate. Reports said he was required to sign a peace bond and comply with conditions aimed at preventing a breach of peace for one year. The latest detention was not his first encounter with preventive action by Delhi Police this month. Dipke had also been detained at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on October 10, when he arrived in the capital to participate in a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
He was released on October 11 along with CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka after furnishing surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each and undertaking to maintain peace and good behaviour for one year, according to earlier reports.
CJP's Campaign Against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar
The planned Tiranga Yatra was part of the CJP's campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR of electoral rolls. The campaign has involved protests by CJP members, student groups and opposition-linked activists. Critics have raised concerns about the voter-list revision, while the Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations of bias in the electoral process.
The planned Connaught Place gathering also became a flashpoint over the right to assemble and the police's enforcement of restrictions in central Delhi. Police cited concerns about crowd management, traffic movement and public safety, while CJP members questioned the grounds for the detentions. Dipke's post featuring Shah Rukh Khan came against this backdrop, offering a humorous reaction to his release while the political dispute surrounding the CJP's campaign continued.
