An Air India aircraft inadvertently entered a wrong taxiway after landing at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Wednesday evening, bringing it directly face-to-face with an IndiGo flight preparing for departure. The two narrow-body Airbus A320 aircraft safely came to a halt roughly 200 meters apart, preventing any ground collision. Authorities have launched an investigation into the navigation error.

The incident occurred as IndiGo flight 6E 5160, scheduled for Mumbai, was taxiing toward the runway for take-off. At the same time, Air India flight AI 2493, which had just arrived from Mumbai, missed its planned route while clear of the runway and turned onto the active taxiway occupied by the departing aircraft. Air India confirmed the navigation mishap in an official statement, noting that the flight "inadvertently took a wrong turn during taxiing" post-landing. The airline emphasized that passenger and crew safety was never compromised. The aircraft was subsequently shut down and towed back to its designated parking bay.

IndiGo also acknowledged the ground incident, reporting that its flight experienced a brief delay during taxiing due to the obstruction. According to IndiGo's statement, both flight crews acted properly to halt their aircraft at a safe distance. The matter has been formally reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other regulatory authorities. This ground movement event follows a separate mishap involving both airlines earlier this year. In February, the wingtips of an Air India A320 and an IndiGo A320 scraped against each other while taxiing at Mumbai airport, requiring both aircraft to be grounded for safety inspections.
