A 12-year-old student is undergoing medical treatment after attempting to take his own life, hours after he was allegedly assaulted by staff members at a private school in Mariyappanapalya, Bengaluru. The Class 7 student is currently admitted to Netus Hospital in Nayandahalli. Following the incident, the boy's father, Mahesh Kumar, lodged a formal complaint at the Jnanabharathi Police Station, accusing the school’s founder secretary, principal, and several teachers of physical assault and harassment.

According to the police complaint, the alleged assault took place on July 14, 2026, when the founder secretary, identified as Rangaswamy, along with the school principal and two to three teachers, severely beat the boy. While the initial complaint did not specify the exact reason for the beating, the father stated that his son returned home in extreme pain and distress, attempting suicide later that evening. Kumar, who runs a local grocery store, told authorities that his son, who attends St. Philomena School under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, had expressed a deep fear of going to school for several days prior to the incident. The child had reportedly complained of facing persistent harassment from teachers, school administrators, and even the parents of other students.

However, preliminary police inquiries with other students have presented a different sequence of events. Student accounts suggest that the boy had an argument with a classmate over a "teeth clip." Following the dispute, a teacher intervened, allegedly scolding and physically assaulting the student. The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing hurt and criminal intimidation. The case also invokes provisions of the Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005, and the Right to Education Act, 2009. Investigators are currently examining both versions of the events to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident. State education department officials are also expected to launch an inquiry into the allegations of administrative harassment.
