In November 2016, the TMC MP compared Banerjee to national icons like Rabindranath Tagore, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi and said the West Bengal Chief Minister's photograph should be kept in every household in the country.
On the second anniversary of demonetisation on November 8, the TMC Chief took a dig at the Centre and alleged that demonetisation was initiated by the Modi government for the benefit of a handful of people, saying the common people were the worst sufferers. Banerjee termed 8th November 2016 as the “darkest day of India". She said the worst sufferers of demonetisation were the agriculture sector, small businessmen, labourers, farmers, the unemployed, domestic workers, poor traders and others.
