Cyclone Arnab Threat: IMD Says Deep Depression Forms Over Myanmar
Days after the threat of Cyclone Arnab dissipated without intensifying into a cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the formation of a new deep depression over the north Andaman Sea and the adjoining Myanmar coast.
A depression over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining Myanmar coast intensified into a deep depression on Monday, September 28, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is expected to cross the Myanmar coast between Yangon and Kyaikto on Monday evening or night before moving north-northwestwards towards the northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh over the following two days.
Deep Depression Moving Towards Myanmar Coast
The IMD said the system was centred around 16.4°N latitude and 97.3°E longitude at 11:30 am on Monday. IMD Warns of Deep Depression Over Myanmar After Arnab Threat Ends

The weather system was moving north-northwestwards and was forecast to cross the Myanmar coast between Yangon and Kyaikto later on Monday. The IMD has not indicated that the system is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
System to Move Towards Bay of Bengal
After crossing the Myanmar coast, the deep depression is expected to continue moving north-northwestwards across coastal Myanmar, the adjoining east-central and northeast Bay of Bengal and towards southeast Bangladesh during the next two days.

Cyclone Arnab Threat Had Earlier Weakened
The latest system comes days after a separate deep depression over the Bay of Bengal affected parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
That system weakened without developing into a cyclonic storm, ending the immediate threat associated with the name Cyclone Arnab. Heavy rainfall from the earlier system affected more than 73,000 people across 10 districts of Odisha, according to the state government's assessment cited by Hindustan Times.
The name Arnab had been associated with the earlier weather system because it is part of the predetermined North Indian Ocean cyclone naming list. However, a system receives a cyclone name only after reaching the required cyclonic-storm intensity.
Heavy Rain Continues in Uttar Pradesh
Meanwhile, parts of Uttar Pradesh continued to face flood-like conditions following several days of heavy rainfall. The depression over the state weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area on Sunday, bringing some reduction in rainfall intensity. Rescue teams continued evacuating people from waterlogged areas, while heavy rain and strong winds had damaged houses, roads, electricity infrastructure and crops in several districts. The IMD continues to monitor the new deep depression over Myanmar and its expected movement towards the Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh.
