Patna, March 13: More than 100 trainee police personnel fell ill on Friday, March 13, following a suspected case of mass food poisoning at the Banka Police Line in Bihar. The trainees reportedly began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and intense stomach pain, shortly after consuming their afternoon meal at the facility’s mess. Emergency services were quickly deployed, and the affected personnel were rushed to the Banka Sadar Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The incident triggered an immediate administrative response, with District Magistrate (DM) Navdeep Shukla and Superintendent of Police (SP) Upendranath Verma visiting the hospital to monitor the situation. While the majority of the jawans are currently reported to be in stable condition, a few remain under close observation as a team of specialised doctors works to manage the influx of patients. Authorities have confirmed that a high-level probe is underway to determine the exact cause of the contamination, which has raised serious concerns regarding hygiene standards at state-run training facilities. According to preliminary reports and statements from the hospital, the trainees had consumed a lunch consisting of fried rice and chana masala (chickpea curry). Shortly after the meal, several jawans began fainting or complaining of burning sensations in their stomachs.
Early investigations suggest a potential presence of toxic substances in the food. Officials are specifically looking into reports that "Sulphas" tablets, a pesticide commonly used to preserve food grains, may have accidentally mixed with the chickpeas during storage or preparation. The sudden arrival of over 100 patients briefly overwhelmed the Sadar Hospital's resources. To accommodate the surge, the hospital administration deployed additional paramedical staff and ensured a steady supply of intravenous fluids and life-saving medicines.
The SP confirmed that most personnel responded well to initial treatment. "All available medical resources have been mobilised. Our priority is the full recovery of every jawan, and we are ensuring they receive the best possible care," stated SP Verma during his hospital visit.
