A viral social media video posted by a 22-year-old man seeking his missing wife has led to the uncovering of a suspected honor killing in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district. The victim's brother has confessed to strangling his 19-year-old sister and secretly cremating her body because he was angered by her choice to marry a man from a different caste.

The investigation was initiated after Gauri Shankar Kumar posted a video online claiming that his wife, Sujata Kumari, had been murdered by her family. Kumar threatened to take his own life if the Muzaffarpur police failed to act, accusing local authorities of initial inaction. Following the widespread circulation of the video, senior police officials intervened, leading to the arrest and subsequent confession of the victim’s brother, Abhishek Kumar. The relationship between Gauri Shankar and Sujata began in 2020 while they were school students. On January 18, the couple eloped and married at a friend's house in Samastipur before moving to Haryana. In response, Sujata’s family filed a missing person and kidnapping case against Gauri Shankar. On February 11, a joint operation by the Bihar and Haryana police traced the couple. Despite Sujata testifying in court that she was an adult and had married by her own choice, Gauri Shankar was sent to jail, and Sujata was placed in the temporary care of her aunt.

While Gauri Shankar was incarcerated, Sujata's mother convinced her to return to the family home during the Holi festival. Gauri Shankar stated that the last time he spoke with his wife was on March 31, shortly after his release from prison. After losing all contact with her, he suspected foul play and petitioned various police departments, eventually resorting to the social media appeal. Following the viral video, Deputy Superintendent of Police (East-1) Alay Vats ordered an immediate probe. When officers could not locate Sujata, they brought her brother in for questioning. During the interrogation, Abhishek Kumar admitted that the inter-caste marriage had severely angered him. He confessed that he, along with other relatives, planned the murder, strangled Sujata to death, and cremated her body to eliminate evidence. Police are currently working to trace the other accomplices involved in the crime.
