Agartala, July 21: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday apologised for calling Punjabis and Jats "less brainy". In a series of tweets, Biplab Kumar Deb said he was sharing views of some people about Punjabis and Jats and that he is proud of both the communities. "In an event organized at Agartala Press Club, I had mentioned the views of some people about my Punjabi and Jat brothers. I did not intend to hurt any community. I'm proud of both Punjabi and Jat communities. I myself have lived among them for a long time. If my remarks have hurt someone, I personally apologised for this," Deb tweeted. In the 48-second video clip, the Tripura Chief Minister can be heard saying, “When we talk about the Punjabis, we say the Sardars are not afraid of anyone. They have a lot of strength but they are less brainy." He went on to explain that the Jats of Haryana are physically well-built but have "limited brains". "Bengalis too have an identity – they are intelligent. It is widely said that none can beat the wit of the Bengalis …. it is their identity in India every community is known with a certain type and character," Deb added.

This is not the first time that Deb has made such controversial remarks. He is known for making unscientific statements. Deb had once claimed that the Internet technology is nothing new to India and it existed even in the Mahabharata and said those who did not believe it was "narrow-minded".
