Boarding Pass Stamping Scrapped From September 1: What International Travellers Should Know
Passengers travelling abroad will no longer need a physical stamp on their boarding passes for immigration clearance from September 1, as immigration authorities move to phase out the manual stamping process at international airports across the country, officials said.
New Delhi, August 22: Passengers travelling abroad will no longer need a physical stamp on their boarding passes for immigration clearance from September 1, as immigration authorities move to phase out the manual stamping process at international airports across the country, officials said.
Why The Decision Was Taken
The decision was taken after the Bureau of Immigration (BOI), under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), found that the physical stamping of boarding passes required for immigration was inconvenient for passengers.
"The matter has been examined by the BOI and it has now been decided to do away with the mandatory requirement of physical boarding passes and the stamping of boarding passes at immigration counters at all international airports in the country," officials told PTI.
Officials added that "improper or incorrect" stamping had also led to errors in reading boarding passes, which prompted the decision to discontinue the procedure. Real or AI? Physical Boarding Passes Will Still Be Accepted
While physical boarding passes will continue to be accepted at airports, they will no longer be stamped by immigration authorities from September 1 onwards.
Security officials said international travellers were also no longer having their boarding passes stamped by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) during individual frisking. The passes are now required to be produced only for clearance by immigration authorities. The CISF had stopped stamping boarding passes for both domestic and international passengers several years ago. How To Send Your Name To the Moon? Pilot Project Underway For Passport Stamping
According to officials, a pilot project is also underway to eliminate the stamping of immigration entry and exit for Indian passport holders. The process is expected to be implemented across Indian airports soon after the pilot exercise is completed.
