What Is Chinese Manjha?
Manjha is kite string that can be made using synthetic or nylon material and may be coated with fine glass particles or other sharp substances. Such strings can cause serious injuries to people and animals.
Its use has been prohibited by authorities and courts because of the risks it poses. The sharp string can be particularly dangerous for motorcyclists and other road users because it can become difficult to see while stretching across roads.
Chinese Manjha Ban And Enforcement Concerns
Chinese manjha has been prohibited in Delhi since January 10, 2017. Ahead of Independence Day in 2023, the Delhi government reiterated the ban on its production, storage, sale and use. Authorities warned that violations could attract up to five years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.
The Delhi government had also said incidents involving Chinese manjha are reported every year around August 15, when kite-flying activity increases. The string poses risks not only to people but also to birds and animals.
Despite the restrictions, local residents in Ghaziabad alleged that the banned string continues to be available in markets. They have urged police and the administration to identify sellers and take strict action against those involved in its illegal sale.
