The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Central government to restore the X (formerly Twitter) account of the online satirical movement, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The court observed that the primary concern cited by the Union Government for blocking the handle-the potential to cause chaos around the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-is no longer relevant as the examination has concluded.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma passed the order while allowing a petition filed by CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, who had challenged the government's blocking order. The legal breakthrough came after the Centre stated it had no further objections to the account being unblocked. Appearing for the Central government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the handle was originally restricted to prevent widespread misinformation or panic among students and parents during a critical academic period. "It was blocked at a time when the NEET examination was to take place. Lakhs of students were to appear. Several posts [on X] would have created chaos among students and parents. Now the examination is over," Mehta submitted to the court, adding that he had no difficulty with the restoration but urged social media users to remain more circumspect. The account was initially withheld by X following a directive issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under Section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The ministry's order had reportedly cited national security concerns following inputs from the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

During an earlier hearing on May 29, the High Court had declined to grant immediate interim relief to the petitioner. At the time, the court noted that the immediate restoration of a suspended account could have far-reaching structural consequences and required a full response from the government. What Is the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ and How To Join It?.

The Cockroach Janta Party is a highly popular digital satirical movement that built a large online following across multiple social media platforms, including X and Instagram. The handle was born out of a legal inside-joke following remarks made during a Supreme Court proceeding earlier in the year regarding social media activism. With the High Court accepting the Centre's latest statement that the temporary administrative necessity has passed, the legal path has been cleared for the platform to fully reinstate the handle's public access.
