Srishti Kandhari, a government teacher, had married Saurabh Raturi, also a government employee, in November last year. The couple lived in the Doiwala area, around 20 km from Dehradun. According to a police complaint filed by Kandhari's mother, she was subjected to mental and physical harassment over dowry and was repeatedly labelled 'unlucky' and 'inauspicious' by her husband and his family. In the 90-second video recorded before her death, Kandhari breaks down in tears before speaking. 'Sorry, mummy, main aise ja rahi hoon (Sorry, I am leaving like this). Everything has become so strange. I have been enduring this for six months. Now I can't endure it anymore. Their mindset can never change. They keep blaming me for things that happened after our marriage. (Calling me) "manhoos, manhoos",' she says in the clip.
The teacher died by suicide on Wednesday. Following her mother's complaint, police registered an FIR against her husband Saurabh Raturi, mother-in-law Parvina and sister-in-law Charu. Delhi: Woman Dies by Suicide, Final Video Accuses In-Laws of Dowry Harassment.
Vandana Verma, Circle Officer, Doiwala, said the FIR has been registered under sections related to dowry death and that a post-mortem examination has been conducted.
'We received information that a woman had died by suicide by hanging herself and a police team, as well as an FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) team, conducted an inspection of the scene. A post-mortem examination has been conducted. The woman's mother has alleged harassment by her in-laws,' Verma said.
'She got married eight months ago. The woman was a government teacher and her husband also works for a government department,' the police officer added.
