Rescue Operation Underway

Teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS) have been involved in the rescue operation. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the debris, while ambulances and emergency personnel remain at the site. Officials said efforts are continuing to determine whether any other people remain trapped.

DCP Shahdara Rajendra Prasad Meena said the collapsed structure covered around 25 square yards and confirmed that multiple agencies were working at the site. North East Delhi District Magistrate Ajay Kumar said witnesses reported that demolition work was being carried out at an adjacent building and that machinery may have caused vibrations before the collapse. He said around seven or eight people were believed to have been inside the building at the time. The reported role of the demolition work has not been established as the confirmed cause of the collapse.

Building Collapse Cause Under Probe

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi had earlier said local residents reported cracks in the building following tremors from an earthquake in Uttarakhand on Tuesday evening. The civic body said the structure was around 20 to 25 years old and that its owner was reportedly in the process of vacating it. There are also differing descriptions of the structure in initial official accounts. Police described it as a four-storey building, while the MCD referred to it as a three-storey structure in a jhuggi-jhopri settlement near Idgah Machhli Mandi. The collapse also damaged parts of an adjoining building and the boundary wall of a nearby mosque, according to the MCD. Authorities are yet to establish the precise cause of the structural failure. The incident comes about a month after a building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on September 6, which killed seven people and injured 12.
