Transport associations in Delhi have demanded an immediate increase in autorickshaw and taxi fares following a hike in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices, warning that they will go on strike on September 9 if their demands are not met. The price of CNG in Delhi and adjoining cities increased by INR 3.89 per kg, pushing the retail fuel price in the national capital to INR 86.98 per kg. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) stated that the revision was necessitated because a significant portion of input gas was being met through imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), whose spot rates have surged due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Unions Warn of Strike Over Mounting Financial Pressures
The sudden hike has intensified financial strain on commercial drivers who are already grappling with high operational overheads. "The Delhi government should increase auto and taxi fares with immediate effect within one week, as CNG prices were increased by INR 3.89 this morning, which has suddenly increased the financial burden on poor drivers," Soni said. Soni noted that fuel costs have seen a cumulative increase of approximately INR 10 to INR 11 over the past two to three months. "The government should increase the fares at the earliest or provide a subsidy on CNG prices. If the fares are not increased, we will hold a strike on September 9," Soni said.

The All India Motor and Goods Transport Association also voiced severe concerns regarding the price revision, pointing out broader economic repercussions. "The sudden increase of ₹3.89 per kg in CNG prices across Delhi-NCR is not merely a matter of higher fuel costs. It will have a direct impact on the pockets of the common man, the transport industry and ultimately the prices of essential commodities," said Rajendra Kapoor, President, All India Motor and Goods Transport Association.
