Days after data showed that 807 people were reported missing in Delhi between January 1 and 15, 2026, the police clarified that the figures actually reflect a decline compared to the same period in previous years. According to official data accessed by PTI, an average of 54 people were reported missing daily, including 191 minors and 616 adults. Of the total, 509 were women and girls, while 298 were men. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Delhi Police said: “Recent public discourse has raised concerns about the welfare of children in Delhi. We appeal to the citizens not to fall prey to the rumours about the spurt in the cases of missing children.”
No Spurt in Missing Children Cases, Says Delhi Police
While firmly denying claims of a sudden rise in such cases, the police also warned rumour mongers of strict legal action for creating unnecessary panic by misrepresenting data. “Those spreading fear and panic by circulating unverified or misleading information will face action under relevant legal provisions,” officials said. Reaffirming its commitment, the police stressed that the safety of every child is of paramount importance. “Delhi Police is committed to serving 24x7 and is making all-out efforts to trace all missing persons and reunite them with distraught family members at the earliest,” the statement added.
The police highlighted that all missing persons complaints are promptly registered and investigated following strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Reports can be lodged at local police stations, online, or through the Emergency Response Support System (112). Cases involving children are given the highest priority.
To strengthen action on the ground, dedicated missing persons squads have been deployed across all districts, while the Crime Branch’s Anti Human Trafficking Unit continues to actively handle cases, especially those involving minors. The police also clarified that no organised gang or criminal network has been found involved in cases of missing or abducted children in Delhi so far.
Appealing for public cooperation, the Delhi Police urged citizens to remain vigilant but calm, report missing cases immediately, and rely only on verified information to support ongoing investigations.
