Australia: Cannibalism Probe Underway After Mother Charged With Murder of 4-Year-Old Son
Australian police are investigating cannibalism as part of the murder probe into the death of a four-year-old boy in Wyong, New South Wales. The child's 32-year-old mother has been charged with domestic violence murder after officers discovered the boy's body. Authorities also ordered a forensic examination of the woman's mouth, while the NSW government has launched an independent review.
Police in Australia's New South Wales have confirmed that cannibalism is among the lines of inquiry in the investigation into the death of a four-year-old boy whose mother has been charged with domestic violence murder. Investigators obtained an urgent court order to forensically examine the 32-year-old woman's mouth after officers discovered the child's body at a home in Wyong on Saturday, July 4.
The woman, who has not been publicly identified, remains in custody after being refused bail. Authorities have not announced any additional charges, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child's death is continuing. Perth Shocker: Teacher Found Guilty of S*xually Abusing 12-Year-Old Student for Over a Year in Australia.
Cannibalism Probe Begins as Mother Faces Murder Charge
According to police, the woman walked into Wyong Police Station at about 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, prompting officers to carry out a welfare check at a unit in Wyong, on the New South Wales Central Coast.
Inside the residence, police found the body of the four-year-old boy. Court documents show investigators later obtained an urgent order allowing forensic examination of the woman's mouth, including samples of internal mouth contents, forensic material and a buccal swab. Samples from her fingernails and underneath her nails were also collected.
Police sources have confirmed that cannibalism will form part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not released further details regarding that aspect of the inquiry.
Media reports, citing police sources, said investigators began considering the possibility after discussions with the woman. The child may also have been dead for several days before being found, according to local media reports.
Police Describe Scene as "Extremely Confronting"
Speaking after the discovery, Superintendent Chad Gillies said investigators encountered a distressing scene. "It was an extremely confronting scene. It's been confirmed that the child had injuries. I am not going to speculate further on what those injuries are." Police also confirmed that officers and emergency service personnel who attended the scene are being offered welfare and support services.
New South Wales Families and Communities Minister Kate Washington announced on Monday that the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) will conduct an independent review into the boy's death.
The review will be led by former Children's Court president Peter Johnstone and will examine the department's previous interactions with the family. Washington said the department had "received and responded to a number of reports" concerning the family, with the most recent report made about 18 months ago.
"There are many people across New South Wales today who are asking how this has happened, and whether or not more could have been done to protect this child," she said. She added that the review would be "timely and thorough" while avoiding any impact on the ongoing criminal proceedings. "I'm sure it has shocked a lot of people across the state and across the nation."
"And we really want to understand if there are things that we could have done differently to create greater protection for him." A spokesperson for the Department of Communities and Justice confirmed previous contact with the family. "Given the matter remains the subject of an active NSW Police investigation, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage," the spokesperson said.
Community Holds Vigil
Residents gathered in Wyong on Monday, July 6, to remember the child, leaving flowers, toys and teddy bears at a makeshift memorial. The vigil was organised by Haylee Elizabeth Dickinson, who said she grew up on a nearby street.
"As a mother and as speaking for every other member in the community I know for a fact that this has absolutely shattered a lot of people," she said. "Rest in peace, beautiful boy. You've left a mark on every single member of this community." Police investigations remain ongoing.
