A 30-year-old Assistant Section Officer with the Ministry of Defence was found dead at her residence in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, on Friday, prompting police to register a case of cruelty and abetment of suicide against her husband and members of her matrimonial family. The woman, identified as Nazia Khanam, was three months pregnant, according to police and family accounts. Her husband is currently absconding, TOI reported.

Police received a PCR call concerning a suspected suicide at around 4.21 pm at Sector 23 police station. A police team reached the residence and took Khanam's body into possession. According to police, Khanam and her husband had gone to a hospital for a medical check-up on the day of the incident. After returning home, the couple reportedly had an argument. Police said Khanam subsequently locked herself in a room while her husband was in another room. She was later found dead.

Family Later Alleges Harassment

Khanam's family initially did not raise any suspicion or make allegations against her husband or other members of her matrimonial family when they appeared before the Executive Magistrate on the day of the incident. Twisha Sharma Death: AIIMS Medical Board Finds Suicide, Rules Out Physical Assault After Second Autopsy.

However, her parents returned the following day and submitted a fresh complaint to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. They alleged that Khanam had been subjected to physical assault and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws, which they claimed contributed to her death.

The family has also alleged harassment related to dowry and has requested that a dowry-death provision be added to the case.

FIR Registered Under BNS Sections

Following the subsequent complaint and the information available during the preliminary inquiry, Delhi Police registered a case under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), concerning cruelty by a husband or his relatives, and Section 108, relating to abetment of suicide.

Police said the allegations made by the family and the circumstances surrounding Khanam's death are being investigated. Further legal action will depend on the evidence and facts established during the probe.

Investigation Underway

Khanam had married Mohammad Azam Ali Khan on April 11 this year. Her husband, who reportedly works as a supply chain manager in Gurugram, has not been located by police so far, according to the latest report.

The investigation is expected to examine the couple's relationship, the allegations made by Khanam's parents and the circumstances immediately preceding her death. Police have not yet established the allegations against the accused as facts, and the probe remains ongoing.
