Dog Menace in Gorakhpur: 42 People, Including Children and Elderly, Bitten in a Day

A sudden surge in stray dog attacks in the Uruwa police station area in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur left 42 people, including children and elderly residents, injured in a single day. The incidents created panic among residents, with those bitten taken to the Uruwa Primary Health Center for treatment before several patients were referred to the district hospital.

The spike in dog bites was reported on September 6. According to health officials, a large number of dog-bite patients arrived at the Uruwa Primary Health Center following the sudden increase in attacks. Dr. JP Tiwari, the in-charge medical officer in Uruwa, said that a large number of dog bite patients arrived on Sunday and were administered TT injections and anti-rabies doses.

Those with more serious injuries were referred to the district hospital for further treatment. Chief Medical Officer Rajesh Jha said dog bites suddenly increased in Uruwa on September 6, resulting in 42 people receiving anti-rabies injections. Three of those affected were referred to the district hospital because their condition was considered critical and they required immunoglobulin injections. Health authorities are continuing to monitor people who were bitten to ensure they receive the necessary treatment.

The incidents have left local residents concerned about the presence of stray dogs in the area. Residents have demanded that the administration capture stray dogs roaming the locality and take steps to prevent further attacks. The sudden number of bite cases has also increased pressure on local authorities to address the stray-dog problem.

The Uruwa Nagar Panchayat is taking appropriate action to control stray dogs in the area, officials said. The health department is also monitoring all reported dog-bite cases. Officials said the hospital has adequate supplies of anti-rabies injections and that no shortage will be allowed to affect the treatment of patients.

Dog bites can require prompt medical attention, particularly when injuries are severe or there is a risk of rabies exposure. The health department's monitoring of the affected residents is therefore continuing alongside efforts by local authorities to control the stray-dog population.
