Woman Dies After Being Set on Fire by Partner in Gurugram

According to Gurugram Police, Sunil Kumar had been in a relationship with Divya Kataria, 23, for nearly one-and-a-half years. The relationship allegedly began after the woman visited his gold-buying shop to sell jewellery more than a year ago. Police said tensions emerged after she learned that he was already married.

Investigators said the woman confronted the accused at his shop on June 18, leading to a heated argument. During the altercation, the accused allegedly poured kerosene on her but did not set her on fire at that time. Following this incident, the woman booked a flat at Central Park on Sohna Road, where both spent the night in an attempt to resolve the dispute. Delhi Horror: 11-Year-Old Girl Sleeping on Pavement Kidnapped, Raped and Murdered Near Haryana Border; Cab Driver Arrested.

Police said that the next morning, the accused allegedly told the woman that the smell of kerosene had gone and asked her to wear the same clothes. Another argument reportedly broke out shortly after, during which the accused allegedly set her on fire.

After the incident, Sunil Kumar himself took the woman to Artemis Hospital in Gurugram. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where she died on June 27.

Police said they first received information on June 19 from Artemis Hospital after the woman was admitted with severe burn injuries. At that time, both the victim and her mother reportedly declined to pursue legal action.

The case took a turn after the victim’s cousin, Vikas, filed a complaint at Sector-9A Police Station on June 30. According to the complaint, the victim had told him on June 22 that Sunil had set her on fire and threatened her and her family if she reported the incident.

Based on the complaint, Gurugram Police registered an FIR and arrested the accused on Wednesday. During investigation, police recovered the kerosene bottle allegedly used in the crime from the accused’s shop, along with his mobile phone. The accused has been produced before a court and remanded to two-day police custody. Police said further investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events.
