The incident occurred around 8.30 pm when the procession was passing through the Ram Nagar crossroads, where nearly 10,000 people had gathered, according to police, Times of India reported. Based on a complaint by Badrinath’s father, Musheerabad police registered a case under Section 194 (suspicious death) of the BNSS.
“When the crackers burst, people in the procession, including Badrinath, who was standing at a sweet shop, started rushing away. This led to jostling and chaos. Though there was no stampede, the teenager may have struggled to get enough oxygen amid the crowd and collapsed,” said L Rajesh, sub-inspector, Musheerabad. “We need to investigate further to ascertain the exact cause of death,” he added. Police said Badrinath was initially unattended after falling to the ground. A policeman later noticed him and attempted to administer CPR. When there was no improvement, the policeman took the student to Gandhi Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Family Blames Loud Music And Firecrackers
Following the incident, Badrinath’s family alleged that the blaring DJ and deafening sound of firecrackers led to the BTech student’s death. Preliminary reports indicate that he had suffered a heart attack. However, the family has questioned whether the loud sounds during the procession contributed to the medical emergency.
Badrinath’s mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, appealed to the police on Sunday to take steps to prevent the use of DJs during such celebrations. “What kind of grand celebration is this with loud music, firecrackers and other disturbances? I appeal to the police to ensure that no other mother loses her son like this,” she said.
According to her, Badrinath had left home in the morning and later joined the procession with a friend from the colony. During the bursting of crackers, the two lost sight of each other and went in different directions.
Musheerabad police denied that a DJ was being used at the location where Badrinath collapsed.
Police said the music system and some speakers were being transported in a separate vehicle, which was far away from the spot where the student fell. They also said Badrinath had been dancing with other participants minutes before his death as the procession took the Ganesh idol to a nearby lane in Ram Nagar.
Police are investigating whether the crowd conditions, the sudden movement of people or a medical emergency contributed to the student’s death.
Rules On DJs During Processions
Hyderabad police have previously appealed to procession organisers not to use DJs, as their use during such events is prohibited.
However, the guidelines have often been flouted by some organisers, with several processions reported to have been conducted with DJs in violation of the rules. Musheerabad police said the investigation will determine the exact cause of Badrinath’s sudden death.
