Speaking at a joint press conference in New Delhi alongside CJP spokesperson Saurav Das, Sibal detailed plans to launch a digital platform where volunteer lawyers can register their locations and areas of expertise. The framework will monitor incident locations, track affected students and demonstrators, and keep a record of police actions taken against them. Sibal urged members of the legal fraternity and citizens across the country to contribute to the legal defense fund. He stated that the primary objective is to ensure that individuals exercising their fundamental right to peaceful protest receive adequate legal support if subjected to false or arbitrary cases.
As part of the joint initiative, the CJP introduced 'Saakshi', a digital evidence repository designed to help protesters and witnesses securely upload and preserve photos and video footage from demonstration sites. The group stated that the archived material will serve as verifiable evidence to counter false allegations in court.
The development follows the calling off of the 36-day nation-wide agitation led by the CJP at Jantar Mantar regarding examination irregularities and the NEET-UG paper leak. The protest ended after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tendered his resignation and the government held talks agreeing to consider exam reforms and withdraw pending FIRs against demonstrators.
