The Department of Consumer Affairs has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, establishing Indian Standard Time (IST) as the mandatory single reference for all legal, administrative, and commercial purposes nationwide. Need for a Unified Time Standard

Modern critical infrastructure relies heavily on precise time stamps for operational security and accuracy, reports PIB. Infrastructure and Indigenous Timing Sources

To support nationwide dissemination, the government is building infrastructure utilizing domestic institutions and Legal Metrology laboratories. The rules facilitate the use of NavIC - India's regional satellite navigation system - alongside other approved domestic timing sources. This transition aims to provide secure alternatives for critical infrastructure while reducing reliance on external or foreign satellite-based time sources.

Technology Demonstrations and Preparation

The rollout builds upon recent advancements under the "One Nation, One Time" initiative. In July 2026, a White Rabbit Technology-based Indian Standard Time Dissemination Demonstration Network was commissioned at the Regional Reference Standard Laboratory (RRSL) in Bengaluru. The demonstration successfully distributed IST for banking, telecom, power, and transport sectors. Collaborative trials have also connected RRSL Bengaluru and NSE Chennai with support from CSIR-NPL, ISRO, SEBI, NSE, and BSNL.

The upcoming 180-day window gives government agencies, financial institutions, and private enterprises time to review current systems, implement technical upgrades, and prepare for mandatory compliance.
