A 49-year-old autorickshaw driver died after being trampled by an elephant while attempting to feed it jaggery in Madhya Pradesh's Indore, police said on Monday, July 27. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 25, in front of the city's Raj Nagar police station, and CCTV video of the attack has since surfaced on social media. Police have registered a case against the elephant's mahout on charges of negligence.
The victim, identified as Vijay Holkar, had approached the elephant to offer jaggery when the animal suddenly turned aggressive. According to police, the mahout, Umesh Goswami, has been booked under Sections 106 and 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities are also investigating whether the required permission from the forest department had been obtained before bringing the elephant into a populated area. Autorickshaw Driver Dies After Elephant Tramples Him While Feeding Jaggery
According to police, Holkar was feeding jaggery to the elephant when it pushed him to the ground with its trunk. During the incident, the mahout allegedly struck the elephant near its head with a stick, making the animal uncontrollable, a police official said.

Holkar was initially taken to the district hospital before being shifted to a private hospital for advanced treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
A doctor who conducted the post-mortem examination said the victim suffered severe internal injuries in the elephant attack, which led to his death, Chandan Nagar police station in-charge Tilak Karole said.
Mahout Booked, Forest Department Permission Under Scrutiny
Police said the elephant had been brought to a social event in the city by a group of seers. The group was reportedly moving around different parts of Indore with the elephant while seeking alms when Holkar approached the animal.
Investigators are now examining whether the organisers and handlers had obtained the necessary permission from the forest department to bring the elephant into a densely populated urban area. The mahout has been booked under Sections 106 and 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation into the incident is underway.
