Indore, February 20: In a significant gesture of respect for organ donation, the Madhya Pradesh government accorded a state farewell and a guard of honour to a 49-year-old man during his last rites on Thursday, February 19. Vijay Jaiswal, a property dealer from Khargone, was declared brain dead following a road accident, leading his family to donate his vital organs. The ceremony follows a state policy intended to encourage life-saving donations by recognising donors with the highest state honours.

Accident of Vijay Jaiswal and Organ Donation Process

Vijay Jaiswal was admitted to a private hospital in Indore on February 15 after sustaining critical head injuries in a road traffic accident. Despite medical efforts, doctors eventually declared him brain dead. People’s University Bomb Threat in Bhopal: Panic Grips After Threatening Mail at University in Madhya Pradesh, Probe On (Watch Video).

Following a consultation with the Indore Society for Organ Donation, Jaiswal’s family consented to the donation of his heart, liver, and both kidneys. Sandipan Arya, the society's coordinator, confirmed that the surgical team successfully retrieved the organs to benefit four different patients.

Logistics and Transplantation

The organ retrieval triggered a coordinated medical effort involving multiple cities. The donor’s heart was transported to Ahmedabad via a special flight for an urgent transplant. Meanwhile, his liver and two kidneys were transplanted into patients at local hospitals within Indore. These "green corridors," often facilitated by local police and health officials, ensure that retrieved organs reach recipients within the narrow window required for successful transplantation.

State Recognition and Guard of Honour

The last rites were performed with full state honours, featuring a guard of honour by the police department. This protocol was established by the Madhya Pradesh government to honour those who give the "gift of life". Officials noted that such public acknowledgements serve a dual purpose: providing solace to the grieving family and raising public awareness about the critical shortage of organ donors in India. Context of Organ Donation in Indore

Indore has consistently emerged as a leader in organ donation awareness in India. Through the efforts of the Indore Society for Organ Donation and proactive government policies, the city has facilitated numerous successful transplants over the last decade. The recognition of Vijay Jaiswal is the latest in a series of state-honoured funerals that underscore the region's commitment to normalising and celebrating organ donation.
