The IRCTC is launching its revamped website today, July 15, to tackle congestion and slow speeds. The upgrade boosts booking capacity to 1.5 lakh tickets per minute, introduces a fare calendar, enables seat selection, and simplifies the user interface by reducing CAPTCHA prompts. These changes aim to make Tatkal and general bookings significantly faster and more accessible.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to launch a revamped version of its website today, July 15, marking a major upgrade to the country’s railway reservation infrastructure. This initiative aims to address persistent passenger complaints regarding website congestion, slow loading speeds, and technical interruptions during high-demand periods, particularly for Tatkal bookings.
Addressing Passenger Concerns
The decision to overhaul the platform followed feedback from students who raised concerns about difficulties in navigating the existing portal, specifically pointing to delays caused by CAPTCHA verification and heavy server traffic. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw subsequently directed officials to accelerate the development of a more efficient system to improve the overall passenger experience. Enhanced System Capacity
The upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) brings a significant boost to technical infrastructure. According to industry reports, the revamped platform is expected to handle more than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a five-fold increase over the current capacity of 32,000. Furthermore, the system’s capacity for handling enquiries will jump from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh per minute, aiming to eliminate the slowdowns often seen during peak traffic hours.
Key Features and Improvements
The new website introduces several features designed to streamline the reservation process:
- Cleaner Interface: The platform features a modernised design that removes unnecessary pop-ups, flashing graphics, and excessive CAPTCHA prompts.
- Fare Calendar: A new tool allows users to compare ticket prices across different travel dates, helping passengers identify more affordable options.
- Seat Preference: Passengers will now have the ability to select their preferred seat or berth during the booking process.
- Multilingual Support: The portal will support multiple Indian languages, increasing accessibility for a wider range of users.
- Integrated Services: Facilities for Divyangjan passengers, students, and patients are being integrated into a single, unified platform. IRCTC Fined INR 10 Lakh Over Poor Food Quality on Vande Bharat Express After Passenger Complaint.
These enhancements are part of a broader push by the Ministry of Railways to digitise its services and build a more scalable reservation system. As the rollout begins, the new features are also expected to be integrated into the RailOne app, ensuring a consistent user experience across both web and mobile platforms.
