Seven years after Jet Airways suspended operations, the first of its former Boeing 777 aircraft departed from Mumbai on Monday evening, August 3, marking a major step in the disposal of the airline’s grounded fleet. The aircraft, sold to Malta-based Ace Aviation earlier this year, took off after receiving regulatory clearance from Indian authorities.
The aircraft was scheduled to depart at 4pm but eventually left Mumbai around 6.30pm after authorities sought additional compliance documents before approving the flight. First of Three Boeing 777 Aircraft Sold to Ace Aviation
The Boeing 777 is among three aircraft acquired by Ace Aviation in February after the Supreme Court ordered the liquidation of Jet Airways in November 2024. The aircraft had remained preserved at Mumbai airport for several years, with their engines maintained while they were grounded.
The departure attracted aviation enthusiasts, with many gathering near the airport perimeter to watch the aircraft take off. More Jet Airways Aircraft Set for Sale
The movement of the Boeing 777 comes as the liquidation process of Jet Airways continues.
Last month, two Boeing 737 aircraft parked in Delhi and Hyderabad were auctioned. The sale process for three Airbus A330 aircraft is expected to begin in September.
The aircraft sales are part of efforts to dispose of the airline’s remaining assets following the liquidation order.
Jet Airways’ Rise and Fall
Jet Airways was founded by Naresh Goyal in 1993 and became one of India’s largest private full-service airlines. The airline faced mounting financial difficulties before suspending operations on April 17, 2019, after failing to secure a financial revival plan.
Following years of legal proceedings and unsuccessful revival attempts, the Supreme Court ordered the airline’s liquidation in November 2024. The departure of the Boeing 777 marks another stage in the process of transferring Jet Airways’ remaining aircraft assets to new owners.
