In a major political setback for former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), party MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Wednesday resigned from all organisational posts within the party amid growing internal dissent. The Barasat MP stepped down as Chairperson of the Women’s Trinamool wing and from other party responsibilities after she was removed as the chief whip of the TMC parliamentary party.

The development came a day after Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar attended an administrative review meeting chaired by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Kalyani along with six TMC MLAs, triggering strong political reactions across Bengal. Who Is Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar? In her resignation letter addressed to state TMC president Subrata Bakshi, Kakoli said the decision came after “deep mental conflict and long contemplation.” While clarifying that she is not quitting the Trinamool Congress, she said she would continue to work for the party as an ordinary worker in the interest of Bengal and its people.

Kakoli also raised serious concerns over the party’s functioning and referred to several controversies that have rocked West Bengal politics in recent years. She alleged that complaints regarding “indecent behaviour” towards women workers by an influential party leader were not adequately addressed despite appeals to senior leadership. Sujit Bose Arrested: ED Captured Former TMC Minister After 11-Hour Interrogation in Kolkata.

The TMC MP further mentioned the RG Kar Medical College incident involving the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor, claiming that attempts to suppress the matter deeply disturbed society and affected her morally. She also criticised the increasing influence of political consultancy group I-PAC, alleging that “unelected and undemocratic forces” were interfering in organisational matters.

Her resignation is being viewed as another major blow to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress amid changing political equations in West Bengal.
