Hyderabad, January 11: Tension gripped Hyderabad’s Safilguda area on Sunday after members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and several pro-Hindu organisations staged a massive protest at the Katta Maisamma Temple, following the arrest of a 26-year-old man for unlawful entry and indecent behaviour near the temple gate.

According to police, the accused, identified as Altaf, was caught on video defecating near the temple entrance, triggering outrage among devotees. The footage also showed locals confronting and assaulting the man before police intervened and took him into custody. Sambhal: Hindus and Muslims Jointly Demolish Parts of Illegally Built Mosque, Dargah, and Temple; Video Goes Viral.

Visiting the temple, Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao slammed the state government and police handling of the case. He rejected suggestions that the accused may be mentally unstable.

“We keep hearing the same narrative of ‘mental imbalance’. This is not an isolated case. There have been five to six similar incidents across Telangana recently. These are deliberate attempts to hurt Hindu sentiments and disturb communal harmony,” Rao said.

He further accused both the Congress-led government and the BRS of maintaining silence, alleging that Hindu religious places were under threat. Rao’s remarks calling for “extreme measures” to prevent recurrence drew sharp attention amid the charged atmosphere.

Following the protests, the Neredmet Police deployed heavy security in and around Safilguda to prevent escalation. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri Zone, appealed for calm, stating that the accused has been sent to 14 days of judicial custody and the law would take its course.

Police confirmed that Altaf, a vegetable vendor, is in remand and that his mental health status is being verified, urging political groups and the public to cooperate with the investigation and maintain public order.
