According to police, one of the women, a resident of Dimapur, said in her written complaint that she and another woman were in the hotel lobby between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. when an unidentified man allegedly touched both of them in an obscene manner. The women were reportedly at the hotel amid celebrations following the Brazil-India football match.
Following the complaint, the Pragati Maidan police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and began an investigation. Police examined CCTV footage from the hotel lobby to identify the suspect. The suspect was identified as Palash Roy, 56, a resident of Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Police said the complainant also identified him after viewing the CCTV footage. Investigators subsequently tracked his movements and arrested him from a room in the same hotel. Kolkata Police Additional Commissioner (Detective Department) Kunal Agarwal said the CCTV footage was being examined and that appropriate action would be taken after a detailed investigation. Police are also verifying the accused’s presence at the hotel and other circumstances surrounding the complaint. The incident occurred after Brazil defeated India 4-0 in an international friendly at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday.
