The incident occurred at approximately 11:42 AM when a significant portion of the heritage structure suddenly gave way, falling directly onto Platform 2. Debris from the vertical structure landed across the platform and over the railway tracks.
A major tragedy was narrowly averted as passengers were not gathered in the immediate vicinity at the time of the collapse. While a Kozhikode-Kannur passenger service train was stationed at the platform, its doors were closed ahead of a later scheduled departure. The falling debris damaged overhead electricity cables, prompting railway officials to immediately disconnect the power supply to Platforms 1, 2, and 3. As a safety precaution, inbound train traffic was regulated, causing temporary halts for multiple services, including the Netravati Express and Eranad Express at nearby stations. Local police, along with Fire and Rescue Services and railway officials, arrived shortly after the incident to cordon off the area and initiate debris clearance operations. According to railway officials, the clock tower was part of an older, defunct station building and had already been marked for demolition. The collapse happened while safety arrangements were being carried out in connection with the station's ongoing redevelopment project, which includes active piling work on the premises. Heavy monsoon rains and the advanced age of the structure are also believed to have contributed to the sudden collapse.
