Mumbai, January 8: The Supreme Court on Tuesday would deliver the verdict on CBI vs CBI case, which it reserved on December 6, 2018. The bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph is likely to announce their verdict at 10:30 am on the controversial decision of Prime Minister-led Central government asking the CBI Director Alok Verma to proceed on leave. The decision was taken in October, 2018, after a bitter fallout between Verma and his No.2 Special Director Rakesh Asthana. CBI Joint Director M Nageswara Rao as interim in-charge of the agency on October 23, 2018.
In another development, central trade unions, backed by All India Kisan Sabha and Bhumi Adhikar Andolan, have called for ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Tuesday and Wednesday. The strike began from Tuesday midnight and most likely to have a massive impact in the Left-dominated states of Kerala and West Bengal. The ‘gramin hartal’, rail roko and road roko are also expected to be seen nationwide. Besides, banks have also announced that they would keep their shutter down for two consecutive days.
The BJP-led Union government is most likely to table the Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill in the Winter Session of the Parliament today, which states that 10 percent reservation to the economically backward class in jobs and education sector. The central cabinet approved the move on Monday, months before the Lok Sabha elections. The opposition has called this move to woo voters; however ruling party claims the demand was long pending.
