Doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow have successfully treated an eight-year-old girl with a rare congenital condition involving near-complete duplication of the colon. The girl, identified as Divya from Ambedkar Nagar, had been passing stool through an extra opening below the vaginal opening since birth while also passing stool normally.

After unsuccessful treatment elsewhere, Divya was referred to KGMU, where doctors diagnosed the unusual condition. A CT scan confirmed the diagnosis of colonic duplication, following which she underwent a three-hour surgical procedure. UP Man Hospitalised After Inserting Plastic Bottle Into His Private Parts, Surgery Saves Life in Ambedkarnagar.

KGMU Doctors Diagnose Rare Colonic Duplication

Prof Anand Pandey from the department of paediatric surgery diagnosed colonic duplication, which was confirmed through a CT scan, according to a release shared with the media on Friday, August 14.

The condition meant that the child had an additional, nearly complete colon alongside the normal colon, resulting in stool passing through an abnormal opening. Doctors decided to perform surgery to correct the condition and restore normal bowel function.

Three-Hour Surgery Performed

The surgery was carried out under the supervision of Prof Jiledar Rawat, Prof Pandey, Dr Rahul Rai, Dr Kriti and Dr Sobha. The anaesthesia team was led by Prof Satish Verma. During the procedure, doctors separated the duplicated colon from the normal colon and joined the two to create a common channel. The surgical approach was aimed at eliminating the abnormal passage while maintaining the normal functioning of the bowel.

The girl is now healthy and no longer passes stool through the abnormal opening, according to KGMU. The successful outcome means she can now pass stool through the normal route without the congenital abnormality affecting her bowel function. The treatment expenses were supported through the CM/PM fund, according to the medical university.
