We are of the view that this would help preserve the institution of marriage and family," the Court stated in its September 23 ruling. The judiciary contrasted historical social structures - where husbands acted as financial providers while wives managed domestic responsibilities—with shifting modern realities, noting that both roles are entitled to equal respect.

Addressing Career Pressures and Unmarried Trends

The Court highlighted that as women become increasingly career-oriented, particularly within demanding sectors like IT, many couples face severe relational strains. According to the Bench, some career-driven women view marriage as an impediment to professional growth and choose to skip it entirely, leading to a rising number of unmarried individuals. "The situation can probably be remedied if husbands would opt to be homemakers," the Court observed, suggesting that flexibility in domestic responsibilities can alleviate pressure on working partners.

Settlement and Dissolution of Marriage

The observations arose from cross-appeals filed against a family court order concerning a doctor couple.
