Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) today, August 31, announced a hike in CNG prices by INR 2 per kg and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) by INR 1 per standard cubic meter (SCM), citing a surge in input costs driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Impact on Input Costs and Supply
The updated rates come into effect from midnight on September 1, setting the price of CNG at INR 88 per kg in and around Mumbai, reports PTI. MGL explained that international market indices have pushed input gas expenses significantly higher due to the regional conflict. “In view of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which has resulted in a significant increase in input gas prices linked to international indices, MGL has announced a revision in the prices of CNG," the official statement said. The company noted that there is "significant demand" for CNG, and a major portion of the required input gas is met through imported spot Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), which carries higher price tags. MGL added that the latest adjustment will only partially offset the surging cost of input gas while helping maintain a steady and continuous supply for consumers.

The revision impacts millions of users across MGL's distribution network. Approximately 13 lakh CNG vehicles operating across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, and Dharashiv in Maharashtra, alongside Chitradurga and Davangere in Karnataka, rely on the supply network. On the domestic cooking gas front, the same rise in input expenses triggered an INR 1 per SCM increase for nearly 30 lakh domestic PNG consumers. This price adjustment follows a similar move by peer distributor Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), which recently hiked CNG prices by INR 3.89 per kg to INR 86.98 per kg in the National Capital Region due to identical cost pressures.
