The action forms part of a special inspection campaign conducted under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of five prominent establishments in Mumbai - The Cricket Club of India Ltd., RK Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club, and The Willingdon Sports Club - following a statewide enforcement drive that exposed severe hygiene and sanitation breaches and food safety violations.
The action forms part of a special inspection campaign conducted under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Across Maharashtra, officials inspected 81 food establishments, issuing improvement notices to 12 entities and suspending licences for 11 businesses that failed to comply with statutory standards. Severe Hygiene Lapses and Pest Infestations
Inspections across the five clubs revealed critical non-compliances, including poor sanitation, cockroach and fly infestations, blocked drainage systems, and improper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Officials also reported the presence of expired food items, mouldy vegetables, and a lack of proper inventory rotation systems like FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out). At the Cricket Club of India, inspection teams found active pest infestations and condensate water dripping onto stored items in cold storage. Meanwhile, operations at MIG Cricket Club in Bandra East faced scrutiny after inspectors discovered that an unauthorised entity, Nebula Catering Services, was operating on the premises without a valid FSSAI licence. Action Against Other Establishments
In addition to the five club licence suspensions, the FDA issued a Stop Business Notice to Goregaon Sports Club in Malad West for operating without the mandatory FSSAI registration or licence. Separate administrative action was also taken against Purnima Restaurant in Fort and Pratik Caterers in Palghar over parallel sanitation and food handling failures. The FDA stated that the ongoing statewide crackdown aims to enforce strict compliance with regulatory safety norms across all public food service providers.
