A 38-year-old man from Maharashtra's Nandurbar has been booked for allegedly raping a woman and cheating her of INR 41.25 lakh after posing as a wealthy businessman on a matrimonial website, police said.

The complainant, a 36-year-old divorcee, lives with her child in Kalyan East in Thane district. Investigators said the man promised to marry the woman and assured her that he would accept her child, gradually developing a close relationship with her. Police alleged that he repeatedly s*xually assaulted her at hotels in Panvel, Navi Mumbai, as well as at her residence in Kalyan, on the pretext of marriage.

According to the FIR, the accused also cheated the woman of INR 41.25 lakh during the course of their relationship. An FIR has been registered at the Kolsewadi police station, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused.

Police suspect the man may have used the same modus operandi to target other women through matrimonial websites by creating a fake identity, gaining their confidence with false promises of marriage and then exploiting them financially and s*xually.

Authorities have urged people using matrimonial platforms to verify the identity and background of prospective matches before sharing personal information or making financial transactions. The investigation is ongoing, and police are examining whether more victims may have been targeted in a similar manner.
