Moitra shared video footage on X (formerly Twitter) depicting the aftermath of the incident, appearing to show that she had been struck by eggs. Referring to Justice Dipankar Datta’s earlier comments regarding her legal submissions, she wrote, “Big shout out to Hon’ble Justice Dipankar Datta ! MiLord - I came to my constituency for a meeting informing West Bengal police & BJP workers with their help pelted eggs on me. True to your advice I faced them as a freedom fighter faced bullets." In her video, Mahua Moitra said BJP workers brought eggs and threw them at her. "This is what's happening in Bengal in front of the police," she added. She shared another video where she blamed BJP workers for throwing eggs at her. "Justice Dipankar Datta - MiLord I am officially both an MP in independent India & a freedom fighter today! BJP office bearers (NOT public) surrounded my mtng & pelted eggs as I left. Thank you MiLord for upholding our Constitutional protections," her post read.
Legal Context and Previous Proceedings
The pointed remark stems from earlier legal proceedings in the Supreme Court, where the bench declined to entertain a plea filed by Moitra challenging a Calcutta High Court order that directed her to appear before police in connection with a hate speech case. During that hearing, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing Moitra, had argued that she should be permitted to appear before the investigating officer virtually.
At the time, counsel informed the bench that Moitra had faced threats of eggs being thrown during a prior visit to the police station - an occurrence that ultimately materialised during her recent constituency visit.
