The cases stem from allegations that several Facebook and Instagram accounts circulated obscene and derogatory material during protests related to the NEET paper leak, according to a report by The Times of India.
Details of the Complaints
The police action follows formal complaints lodged by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in Telangana. T Saikiran Goud, a 32-year-old member of the Telangana BJP social media core committee, submitted a list of 20 Facebook and Instagram links to authorities, requesting a detailed investigation into the handles hosting the material.
Goud alleged that the accounts were publishing content harmful to the Prime Minister’s reputation and distributing narratives that could impact national sovereignty, integrity, and public order.
In a second complaint, BJP supporter S Aravind Reddy of Nampally cited multiple digitally altered videos and images featuring Prime Minister Modi, the US President, and former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Legal Action and Police Notice
Following the complaints, Hyderabad Cybercrime Police invoked provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act. The cases explicitly name the individual account operators alongside Meta's head of Indian operations as co-accused for hosting the flagged material.
Investigating officers confirmed that formal notices have been served to Meta regarding the allegations and the specific URLs provided by the complainants. Law enforcement officials noted that while all links cited in the complaints had become inactive by Thursday evening, efforts remain ongoing to trace the individuals operating the accounts.
