How The Escape Happened
The sheriff’s office said Dieterich escaped at about 4:20 p.m. on September 1. “Preliminary information indicates Dieterich manipulated the cell door by lifting the door enough to place a pencil into the locking mechanism, allowing him to slide the door open.”

“Dieterich then traveled through the kitchen area of the detention center and exited through an unlocked door. This door is routinely used by jail trustees assigned to kitchen duties. ... After exiting the building, Dieterich entered a secured area surrounded by fencing and barbed wire. Dieterich scaled the fence and barbed wire, sustaining cuts.”
The sheriff’s office said the cell door and locking mechanism remain functional when operated normally, but the incident showed that the mechanism could be deliberately manipulated. “The door and locking mechanism remain functional and properly secure the housing area when operated normally,” the sheriff said. “The issue occurs when the door and locking mechanism are intentionally manipulated in this manner.”
Deputies Recapture Inmate
Detention staff discovered that Dieterich was missing during routine rounds after finding the housing-area door ajar. Other inmates also alerted staff that he had left the area. Deputies were notified at about 4:41 p.m. and located Dieterich near the Chesterfield County Shop on Jones Road at approximately 4:48 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said Dieterich assaulted a deputy while officers attempted to take him into custody. He was eventually detained and taken to McLeod Health Cheraw for treatment of cuts suffered while climbing the barbed-wire fence. After being medically cleared, he was returned to the Chesterfield County Detention Center. Dieterich now faces additional charges including unlawful escape, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and malicious injury to personal property, according to the sheriff’s office.
Why Dieterich Was In Custody
Dieterich had originally been arrested in June on South Carolina charges involving a stolen vehicle, controlled substances and failure to stop for a blue light. He pleaded guilty to those charges on August 13 and received a sentence of time served, according to reporting citing the sheriff’s office.
He nevertheless remained at the Chesterfield County Detention Center because of an active hold connected to charges in North Carolina. Officials said Dieterich had not signed a waiver of extradition.
Security Review Underway
The escape has prompted additional security measures at the detention center. The sheriff’s office said a correctional officer was posted at the entrance to the B-Work Camp housing area overnight, and that the area would remain under direct supervision while officials evaluate the door and locking mechanism.
“Any escape from our detention center is a serious matter, and we are conducting a full review of how this occurred,” Sheriff Cambo Streater said. “While our deputies were able to locate and take Dieterich back into custody within minutes of being notified, our responsibility does not end with his capture.”
The sheriff described the detention center as an aging facility, with portions dating to 1972, and said the incident had identified a security vulnerability that could be manipulated.
